The Challenge
With Atlassian’s strategic decision to a cloud-first approach, the ecosystem of partners that historically managed the on-premise, Data Center (DC) hosting began facing a critical business decision: either continue to invest in providing the operations part of the DC installation for their customers or shift focus to consulting services only. This change posed a challenge, especially for partners with a loyal customer base still dependent on Data Center installations who have no intention into migrating to the Atlassian Cloud Offering in the near future.
Prepend, a Platinum Atlassian solution partner, found itself at this strategic decision. Known for its deep expertise in Atlassian application consulting, Prepend had built strong customer relationships over the years. However, continuing to manage the infrastructure side—especially with the increasing complexity of security, updates, and availability—was becoming less meaningful to the company's strategic goals and more resource-draining as many small customers where migrating to the Atlassian Cloud offering.
That’s where PCG’s Atlassian Managed Hosting came in.
The Solution
The Atlassian Managed Hosting offering of PCG is based on Atlassian's DC products and makes these applications available to customers in a highly optimised container-based environment on AWS EC2 instances. It uses underlying AWS services and state-of-the-art technology like DataDog, NewRelic and many others to provide their customers a highly available, fast and secure Atlassian DC environment.
Thanks to PCG's extensive expertise in the operational management of Atlassian applications, developed over many years, and its broad and established customer base, the hosting of Atlassian Data Center applications continues to be a core area of strength and excellence for PCG. This continued profitability is largely driven by significant economies of scale that PCG is able to leverage across its managed hosting environment.
The Collaboration
Recognizing the opportunity for synergy, PCG and Prepend formed a strategic partnership. The goal: to offer a seamless, high-performance, and fully supported Atlassian experience to end customers—without compromising on either operational excellence or consulting.
Division of Responsibilities
PCG
- Migration of Atlassian Data Center customers to PCG’s AWS-based Atlassian Managed Hosting
- Full responsibility for operations: availability, backups, updates, monitoring, and security
Prepend
- Continued customer-facing consulting and support during migration phase within Atlassian tools (Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence)
- Supporting customers with administration tasks, project management, best practices, and configuration guidance
Execution
- Seamless Migration
The transition began with PCG migrating Prepends’s existing Atlassian DC customers into its AWS hosted environment. Using a refined migration process, PCG ensured zero data loss and minimal downtime, gaining the trust of both Prepend and its customers.
- Operational Excellence
PCG took over the complete infrastructure management—from monitoring system health to performing proactive security patching and automated backups. This allowed customers to enjoy the stability and performance benefits of an enterprise-grade cloud environment without having to migrate to the Atlassian Cloud.
- Customer-Focused Consulting
With the infrastructure responsibility taken care of by PCG, Prepend was able to focus solely on delivering high-value services: customizing Jira workflows, refining Confluence spaces, optimizing integrations, and providing strategic Atlassian usage recommendations.
Results and Benefits
The combined offering delivered what customers truly wanted: a worry-free, expertly managed Atlassian experience.
- Increased Uptime and Performance: Centralized hosting in a scalable AWS infrastructure reduced latency, improved reliability and enhanced security.
- Cost Improvements: Leveraging economies of scale, advanced automation, and PCG’s established partnership status and extensive experience with AWS, the operational management of Atlassian environments can be delivered with high efficiency and at a significantly more competitive cost compared to other providers.
- More Strategic Engagement: Freed from the operational burden of hosting-related responsibilities, Prepend's consultants were able to dedicate their expertise fully to supporting clients in maximizing the business value derived from their Atlassian applications.
- Customer Retention: Many clients who might have considered switching to other solutions stayed with Atlassian's DC offering thanks to the improved experience.
Looking Ahead
This partnership has proven to be a sustainable model for navigating the cloud-first shift while maintaining the best of both worlds: robust hosting and hands-on consulting. As more Atlassian customers seek flexible and hybrid solutions, PCG and Prepend are ready to scale this model to meet rising demand.
