Citrix modernisation: AppStream 2.0 - Less effort and better user experience

About Messer Business and IT Consulting GmbH (MBIC)

Messer Business und IT Consulting GmbH (MBIC) is the internal IT service provider for numerous Messer Group companies. In this function, MBIC operates a large number of enterprise applications that are available to users.

The Challenge

MBIC needs to provide a virtual desktop solution for internal customers to ensure access to critical systems. The current solution, which is based on Citrix for the virtualisation of the VDIs, requires a great deal of effort to ensure smooth operation. In addition to the considerable operating expenditure, there are also significant costs for licences and hardware, which must be designed for peaks.

The Solution

With the help of the end-user compute service from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Amazon AppStream 2.0 in particular, the VDI solution has been placed on a new platform. The new solution offers scalable, user-persistent performance that can be customised to the requirements of each user group. The centralised management allows MBIC to improve security aspects, and the user-group approach enables resources to be scaled in line with objectives.

The solution was designed and developed together with PCG in various workshops. After the solution went live, we worked together to fine-tune it and reduce unnecessary resources in order to keep costs as efficient as possible.

Results and Benefits

The current solution includes the Amazon AppStream 2.0 and Amazon FSx services, which offer a user-persistent VDI solution. By re-platforming the solution, the financial outlay was reduced by more than 30 % and the cost of operating the solution was cut by over 50 %.

At the same time, the centralised management of the ‘golden images’ and security aspects allows IT-approved security features. The division into user groups enables an efficient structure that provides the ideal service for everyone.

The new solution offers us better performance with significantly lower costs and operating expenses. This has also given us great internal buy-in for our upcoming transformation.
